This week I have looked into balance. Balance is a key aspect of the swing that is often overlooked!! We all talk about “striking” it and using the middle of the face, but quite frankly, how can any of us expect to do so consistently, if the person holding the club can’t hold their balance well enough to stay still when swinging! After-all golf is all about creating a swing that you can repeat the same time, every time (with the correct technique ideally, but we will leave that to Tim and his team!!). We shouldn’t forget that good balance will also help us around the course; walking up and down hills and slopes, getting in and out of bunkers and playing those shots when your having to adapt for an awkward lie! Your balance is made up of 3 main components; the vestibular system (the fluid in the inner ear that works a bit like a spirit level), your vision (how your brain uses what you can see to keep you upright) and your proprioception (your nervous system sending signals from a part of the body to the brain, to give you that “sense” of balance and tell you where your body parts are compared to other body parts i.e. where two bones meet at a joint). The fluid in the ear and your vision are a little out of my control.... fortunately, proprioception is very trainable and doing so regularly will give you great results! Watch the video, give the exercises a go regularly, see your balance improve and in turn, see the results in both day to day life, and importantly, in your game and around the course!
