The World Handicap System (W.H.S)
After attending a 3 hour County meeting last week regarding the new handicap system (which I do have to say was very interesting), I thought I would condense the information down and share with you.
1. The system is to be rolled out in the U.K on 2nd November 2020. 2. The purpose is to ensure that Handicaps WorldWide will be assessed in the same manner. 3. The W.H.S. is an average based system. 4. All players will have a Handicap INDEX. Your Handicap Index will be assessed on the average scores of; a) The best 8 scores of the last 20 scores that is in your playing record. b) If you only have 15 scores; it will be the average of the best 5. c) If you only have 9 scores; it will be the average of the best 3 scores. d) If you only have 3 scores; it will be your best score reduced by 2, this also applies to the Initial Handicap cards put in to obtain a Handicap Index. 5. Your Handicap Index figure will be adjusted by the Course Rating, and Slope Rating of the course you are playing, and the Tee Box used on that course (White, Yellow, Red, or other).
6. The current standard scratch score system will be replaced by the Course, and Slope Rating system. 7. The Corse Ratings (72.1) for example will have been assessed by Officials from England Golf, and Staffordshire Union. 8. The Slope Rating to try and explain: is the difference between the Course Rating for a Scratch Player, and the Course Rating for a Bogey (Handicap) Golfer. This indicates the degree of difficulty of the course for the respective players. N.B. 1. In determining the rating for a “Bogey” Golfer; the statisticians worked on a handicap of about 20. 2. Both the ratings for Aston Wood were assessed some 4 years ago. We are working on having the course re-assessed in the very near future. 9. With regard to the Score Differential; see attached showing the calculation. 10. Adjusted Gross Score; This caters for: Net Double Bogey on a high scoring hole: if all holes are not played it records Net Par on the holes not played.
11. At each course, a chart will be displayed showing the effect on your Handicap Index for that particular course, depending on the tees used, and the application of the Course Rating, and Slope Rating. 12. The Competitions to count for Handicap Index purposes are: All Single Medal, Stableford and Bogey Competitions played by the Rules of Golf. N.B. Single Social Scores may also count, provided that you DECLARE YOUR INTENT BEFORE START OF PLAY. (i.e. like as you would do now in declaring you are completing a Supplementary Score Card.) 13. The more “Qualifying” scores you submit, the more accurate your handicap index will reflect on your standard of play. 14. It is imperative that players enter their scores onto the PSI. The reason behind this is that Handicap Indexes are updated at midnight every day, that being whether the competition is closed or not, and whether you have put a General Play card in. You Handicap Index will always be up to date. To run alongside this; Players handicap Index can be suspended if they repeatedly contravene rules and regulations. “YOU CAN BE BANNED FROM ALL COMPETITIONS FOR A PERIOD OF TIME WHICH WILL BE NOTIFIED”.
